How it is calculated. Year starts at Li Chun (sun at 315°); months start at the 12 solar terms. Birth time is converted from the birthplace's historical time zone to true solar time (longitude and equation of time). Late Rat hour convention: the day changes at midnight; 11 pm–midnight uses the next day's Rat-hour stem. Flying Star periods change at Li Chun (Period 9: Feb 4, 2024 – Feb 3, 2044). Replacement (Ti Gua) charts are not applied. Schools differ on some conventions; confirm important dates with your Tong Shu almanac or a consultant.

Directions are true north. Phone and hand-held compass readings are magnetic: add your local declination before entering degrees (Syracuse, NY ≈ −12°, so magnetic 192° ≈ true 180°).
