BOAC Flight 911 departed Tokyo Haneda Airport on March 5, 1966, at 1:58 p.m. local time. The aircraft disintegrated mid-air approximately 20 to 30 minutes after takeoff, around 2:20 pm., while flying near Mount Fuji. The crash occurred shortly after the plane passed over Gotemba City at an altitude of about 16,000 feet (4,900 m), encountering severe clear-air turbulence.

Initially, the flight was scheduled to take a South(erly) departure followed by a 40-degree right turn toward Hong Kong. However, due to clear weather and the desire to provide passengers with a scenic view of Mount Fuji, Captain Bernard Dobson requested and received permission to amend the flight plan. The aircraft then flew South West toward Mount Fuji, passing north of Odawara and turning right toward the mountain on a heading of approximately 298°. Shortly after passing over Gotemba City, the aircraft encountered severe clear-air turbulence, leading to its in-flight break-up.
