Human Emotional Patterns: 5 Buddha Families & 5 Elements

As you probably know each of 5 Buddha Families represented by 5 different colors, and each of these colors also represents one of our 5 base afflictive emotions or mental obscurations.

  1. Vairochana (Buddha Vairochana) Represented by the color white, this family is associated with the emotion of ignorance. The white color symbolizes the wisdom of all-encompassing space, which transforms ignorance into the wisdom of reality.

  2. Vajra Family (Buddha Akshobhya) Represented by the color blue, this family is linked to the emotion of anger. The blue color signifies mirror- like wisdom, which transforms anger into a clear, reflective state of mind.

  3. Ratna Family (Buddha Ratnasambhava) Represented by the color yellow, this family is associated with the emotion of pride. The yellow color symbolizes the wisdom of equanimity, which transforms pride into a state of even-mindedness.

  4. Padma Family (Buddha Amitabha) Represented by the color red, this family is linked to the emotion of desire. The red color signifies the wisdom of discriminating awareness, which transforms desire into discernment.

  5. Karma Family (Buddha Amoghasiddhi) Represented by the color green, this family is associated with the emotion of envy. The green color symbolizes the wisdom of all-accomplishing activities, which transforms envy into the ability to accomplish all things.

Based on this you can determine which deity or Buddha Family you connect with the most. You just have to be honest with yourself and your emotional patterns. When it comes to specific health conditions, selecting “Helpful Buddha” practice also comes from emotion-obscuration-disorder pattern analysis, not just intuitive assumption.

The three poisons as roots of illness

Tibetan medicine posits that all illnesses ultimately stem from the three poisons (or afflictive mental factors) of attachment (desire/ greed), aversion (anger/hatred), and delusion (ignorance). These poisons are believed to disrupt the three fundamental energies or humors of the body: Rlung (wind), Mkhrispa (bile), and Badken (phlegm). When these humors become imbalanced due to the influence of the three poisons, it can lead to various physical and mental health problems.

Emotional impact on specific humors

Attachment/Desire is linked to disturbances in rlung (wind). Color Red. Excess desire and restlessness are thought to disrupt the subtle flow of rlung, which can manifest as anxiety, sleeplessness, and in severe cases, even madness. People, who meditate without proper grounding in Sutra or physical wellbeing can sometimes develop “Lung - meditator disorder” and mental problems associated with it. This is also result of desire or attachment to the outcome. When person refuses to let go of idea of becoming enlightened and unable to relax. This can cause multiple disturbances in your body and mind. Sometimes, it is ok to let go of your thriving and get back to practice later. Westerners have a tendency to push through without balancing, it is part of our competitive culture. Unfortunately, westerners forget that when it comes to Dharma: self-patience and self-discipline go together. You are not a bio-robot, and this is not a Wall street achievement or Noble Prize you must have, this is a lifetime award. Being patient with self matters. You may be surprised with your realizations once you actually let go desire to succeed.

Anger/Aversion is associated with imbalances in mkhrispa (bile). Color Blue. Constant anger can disrupt the body’s heat energy and lead to disorders like high blood pressure, inflammation, and liver problems. These can lead to cancer and multiple internal disorders, from diabetes to strokes. If you have been diagnosed with one of these disorders, think about what you can correct without medications? What or who do you despise the most? Who or what in your life causes you to feel angry or irritating most of the time? Getting to the root cause of these emotions may help you find a cure or speed up the healing process.

Delusion/Ignorance is connected to disruptions in badken (phlegm). Color White. Laziness, mental dullness, and a lack of awareness stemming from delusion are seen as contributing to imbalances in bodily fluids andbadken disorders like obesity, general weigh problems and slow metabolism. These are probably the hardest to cure, simply because these are the most common obscuration embedded into us by the western society. It does not mean that all overweigh people are completely deluded or ignorant, but it does mean they can not see things clearly, like need tor a temporary fasting or diet, or self-discipline, for example. Lacking self control is the main problem with phlegm disorder.

Sometimes, people caring for others do not have much time to take care for themselves. In this case, when you drive the car or cook your food, or run on your treadmill, you can still generate merit by just playing your favorite mantra loud for 10 - 15 minutes and being aware that you are listening. You will still get a huge benefit by doing so, plus it helps your animals or sick people around, if you have any in the house or in the car with you. We often hear Tantric practitioner say “Manifesting or transforming Thee Poisons as Three Kayas”- this is what they mean transforming negative emotions into positive, by recognizing them before acting on it, becoming aware of emotions prior to any actions. Becoming aware can prevent us from getting sick.

If you for example work as a formal military veteran, doctor, paramedic or work as butcher and are non-vegetarian you have participated in killing intentionally or not, sorry. We all have, we refuse to admit it. If you are someone who chose not to have a child and had an abortion you have participated in killing. If you are doctor, who did not save the patient, unintentionally, but you still killed them, sorry. You choose this profession consciously knowing this may happen, so you are responsible for the outcome, no matter what it may look like. But sincere regret, not autopilot recitation will actually pacify the actions.

As to Misdeed of improper discipline, it is not just for Monastics or Tantric practitioners. If you work as a banker or financial advisor, and you lost your clients money in a financial crash turmoil, you are partly responsible. It is your job to protect their wealth, but you lost it. If you had filed bankruptcy in the past and had charged off debt without ever paying it - you have committed act of stealing or theft, believe it or not.

Why bother practicing Dharma at al during 21st Century when we have AI and Purely Cybernetic Sounds to Mediate?

Because, if you never think about energetic effect of these actions, they eventually kind of pile up, like tsunami or an avalanche, and, it will kill you back during one of the lifetimes, eventually, we just never know when, because we, our consciousness, never really cease to exist. Because we exist infinitely we do not realize how many actual mistakes we make or made. That’s all. The purpose of any meditation is to invoke the power, energy, and realization of Nature of your Mind, in order to destroy the four demons and misconceptions.

Misconceptions are the wrong concepts that arise in the minds of all sentient beings, as our daily autopilots:

  • Believe in things to be true which are not true

  • Believe that things are permanent, but they are always changing

  • Believe your ego exists and cling to it, but it it nowhere to be found, if you really search

The four demons, or Düzhi in Tibetan, are:

  • the demon of the aggregates

  • the demon of the emotions

  • the demon of death, and

  • the demon of the gods

The chöjung, the "Ttriangular source of Dharmas," or Triangle, that is used in many diety mandalas, actually symbolizes the three doors of liberation. The three doors of liberation:

  • cause

  • effect and

  • their nature

are all bases of great Emptiness and our 3 Dimensional Reality. This is also symbolism behind the traditional Dagger (Phurba).
