Tibetan & Chinese Medicine as treatment options for Multiple Sclerosis

Tibetan medicine offers a unique perspective on Multiple Sclerosis (MS), interpreting the disease through the lens of its three humor theory—rLung (Wind), MKhris pa (Bile), and Bad gen (Phlegm). According to this framework, the physical disruption of central nervous system myelin membranes in MS is viewed as a continuum of imbalance among these three humors. Myelin lipids, including phospholipids, sphingolipids, and cholesterol, are correlated with the three humors based on their thermodynamic properties. Sphingolipids are associated with rLung due to their role in cellular movement and change, phospholipids with MKhris pa because of their energetic and fluid-like properties, and cholesterol with Bad gen due to its structural role in membranes.

Clinically, MS is often seen as a rLung-MKhris-pa disorder in women and a Bad gen-MKhris-pa disorder in men, with rLung-MKhris pa excess in both genders during exacerbations, inflammation, and demyelination. Tibetan medicine emphasizes a holistic approach, integrating diet, lifestyle, herbs, and accessory therapies to restore balance and promote healing. For instance, certain Tibetan herbal formulations and therapies such as golden needle therapy, moxibustion, and therapeutic massage are used to manage symptoms and control disease progression.

While there is no specific mention of MS in traditional Tibetan medical texts, practitioners have reported success in treating various forms of MS, including cases with total remission.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is viewed in Chinese medicine as a type of Atrophy Syndrome, where a part of the body becomes weaker or smaller. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), MS can be classified into the category of "atrophy syndrome" and is mostly associated with internal causes and diet, which can be the loss of nourishment of the muscles and arteries and weak body caused by evil closure of the meridians, qi deficiency and blood weakness, poor emotions, and qi and blood stasis.

In Chinese medicine, the treatment for MS includes acupuncture and Chinese herbs, which can help considerably alleviate symptoms and slow down the progress of multiple sclerosis. Additionally, herbal treatment conditioning can be used to treat MS, and acupuncture combined with herbal medicine can prevent and delay the progression of the disease and achieve a better curative effect. Chinese medicine is proved to have curative effect in the treatment of MS, which can improve neurological deficits and reduce side effects caused by hormones. Acupuncture and TCM can provide a safe, natural way for those living with MS to stay as healthy as possible. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is widely used to treat MS in China.

I chose Tibetan & Chinese treatment approach after I did personal research on possible causes of MS, beside genetic, as my DNA test did not show any possible links to MS specifically. I learned the relationship between multiple sclerosis (MS) and over immunization with the anthrax vaccine. Some reports suggest that the anthrax vaccine may be associated with MS. For example, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association noted that numerous case reports have suggested a possible association between optic neuritis and receipt of several vaccines, including the anthrax vaccine. Additionally, there have been reports of military personnel experiencing severe side effects, including MS, after receiving the anthrax vaccine. I did not serve in military, but I was born in USSA and had 2 Anthrax immunizations before the age of 2, I still have 2 scars on both arms. I do consider this as possible cause of my initial condition, or though it is not 100% proven and medical association still debating this link. I used Tibetan Precious Pills & acupuncture, as well as ayurvedic diet approach for over 5 years, consistently, from June 2010 until August 2015. I also consistently used cannabis since late 2012, and periodically No-Spa ® instead of steroids. In 2006 and 2009 I used injections of Cerebrolysin ® for 7 days each of the years. So far I have not had a relapse since 2013.

I personally took following medications, during the period from July, 2010 up to August, 2015:

  1. Rinchen Ratna Samphel or Mutik 70 x 1 a month (on 10th lunar day)

  2. Rinchen Drangjor Rilnag Chenmo x 1 a month (on 15th lunar day)

  3. Rinchen Mangjor Chenmo x 1 a month (on 15th lunar day)
